Tianjin Travel Guide
General Introduction to Tianjin
Tianjin is a metropolis in Northeastern China. It is governed as a direct-controlled municipality, one of four such designations, and is thus under direct administration of the central government, and borders Hebei Province and Beijing Municipality, bounded to the east by the Bohai Gulf portion of the Yellow Sea. In terms of urban population, it is the sixth largest city of the People's Republic of China, and its urban land area ranks 5th in the nation, only after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Tianjin's urban area is located along the Hai He River, which connects to the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers via the Grand Canal in Tianjin. Its ports, some distance away, are located on the Bohai Gulf in the Pacific Ocean. Tianjin was once home to foreign concessions in the late Qing Dynasty and early Kuomintang (KMT) era. The municipality incorporates the coastal region of Tanggu, home to the Binhai New Area and the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA). Tianjin Municipality borders Hebei province to the north, south, and west; the Chinese capital Beijing is to the northwest, and the Bohai Gulf to the east.
Tianjin Weather and Climate
Tianjin's features a monsoon-influenced climate that lies in a transition zone between three different climates under the Köppen climate classification; a humid subtropical climate (Cwa), a humid continental climate (Dwa) and a semiarid climate (Bsk). Tianjin is characterized by hot, humid summers, due to the monsoon, and dry, cold winters, due to the Siberian anticyclone. Spring in the city is windy but dry. Occasionally during the spring, Tianjin experiences sandstorms which blow in from the Gobi Desert. These sandstorms can last for several days. Tianjin's annual precipitation is just above 540 mm (21.3 in) per year, most of which occurs during the summer months of July and August. That, combined with its average annual mean temperature of 13.2 °C (55.8 °F), places Tianjin on the border of a semiarid climate. Since Tianjin’s January average is −2.9 °C (26.8 °F) while its average in July is 26.9 °C (80.4 °F), the city also transitions between a humid subtropical climate and a humid continental climate. The average high in January and July are 1.8 °C (35 °F) and 31.0 °C (88 °F) respectively. Extremes in the China Meteorological Administration's short record range from −17.8 °C (−0 °F) on January 7, 1985 to 40.5 °C (105 °F) on July 1, 2000.
